This is a rare First Edition of the Comedy Play by Robert McLellan, OBE (1907–1985).
McLellan was a leading figure in the 20th-century movement to recover Scotland's theatrical traditions. He found popular success with plays and stories written in his native Scots tongue and was regarded as one of the most important modern exponents of fine prose in the language.
This book was published in Glasgow, 1936. The play is set in Threedale, on the Scottish Border. The action takes place in the early years of the reign of King James the Sixth. Today, he is probably best remembered for his historical comedies. He was awarded a Civil List Pension in 1968 for "services to literature in Scotland" and received an OBE in 1978.
The book measures: 20.5 x 16.8 x 0.8 cm. It has 68 pages.
"Toom Byres" was McLellan's first successful full-length play. It was first performed at the Curtain Theatre, Glasgow.
This volume is now hard to find as originally published. It has a hard card cover - with the most wonderful illustration on the front. The book is in good condition, generally nice and clean with no nasty condition issues.
