George Ormerod grew up in Kent and graduated with a Fine Arts degree from Sunderland University. He also has teaching qualifications, including a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. He set up his own pottery in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1991. After setting up his pottery workshop, George began teaching ceramics in 1998.
He makes fine hand-thrown contemporary pots and plates for domestic and decorative purposes. His work often features rich glazes and vibrant patterns.
This is a stunning large vintage decorative platter by Ormerod - it is decorated with a shoal of fishes - created with wax resists and glazes. I love the ribbed border rim that forms two curled handles on each side, as photographed.
It has Ormerod's impressed mark (g o) on the base, as photographed.
It is a substantial and unique piece by him - weighing (unpacked) 1.4 kg. It measures 11 inches in diameter and is two inches in height. This is certainly a great piece for collectors of English Art Pottery.
These days Ormerod sells his unique pieces at specialist craft fairs and galleries throughout the UK.
