This is a pretty little work - and ideal for a smaller, more intimate interior or library space.
It is a lithograph / bookplate and dates to around 1906. These were small decorative labels that were often applied to the flysheet or inner front over of a book. They would signify who the owner of the book was and if the book was found elsewhere - proper ownership would not be of debate.
These bookplates often had the latin "ex libris" meaning from the library of. In this case the owner of the book with a Fred JM Christie - as annotated below the design. He was a wealthy Glasgow textile merchant and not only could he afford a fine library - but he was also able to commission Jessie M. King (1875 - 1949) to design and print these book labels.
The bookplate also has the following aphorism "Ars longa, vita brevi" or art is long, life is short. The illustration above - shows two young maidens readying a book - with the Egyptian sphinx in the background. Little figures, birds and flowers make up a highly intricate and decorative border.
King was known for her meticulous outline drawing and fairy tale imagery and her influence can be seen in the work of her close friend, the artist Cecile Walton (1891-1956). Her work is always much sought after and his is a more affordable piece by her.
