This is a lovely piece of folk art. It is a heavy porcelain figurine of two sweethearts embracing. It is entitled The Lovers.
The model was made in the Ukraine in the 1950s / 1960s.
On the base is the mark for the Polonne ZHK Factory. The factory was located in the Khmelnitsky region of the Ukraine. The were a prominent Soviet-era manufacturer (1950s–1990s) known for producing, hand-painted porcelain figurines, animal sculptures, and decorative vases.
These stylized figures were very popular items both for the more local Soviet market and also for export to leading retailers around Europe.The post-war Soviet figurines are much sought after. This one is in perfect condition with no damages of any kind.
The figures have a literary source and are said to represent the lovers Galya and Levko from Gogol's novel of 1831 "The May Night". The couple is depicted wearing the traditional costume of the Ukraine Region.
The height is about 28.5 cm. Weight unpacked is 1.1 kg
A rather more common piece of Ukranian Pottery - and this is reflected in my lower asking price for this finely modelled piece. It is in excellent condition with no damages.
