This is a bit of a show-stopper if you collect vintage Sommerso vases in the style of Flavio Poli for Seguso. This one is unsigned but is certainly a very good quality vintage piece.
It is much larger than other examples I have seen - coming in at about 9 3/4 inches in height. The width at the widest point of the vase is about 5 inches. It is very substantial piece of glass, having a weight of 1.5 kg.
This piece comes from my own personal collection, and I have owned it since the early 1980s - and it was a vintage piece then!
As you can see - it has a sleek amorphic form with two protruding ears or horns. The interesting thing about this piece which you dont often see on these large Italian pieces are the two clear glass handles to the side - formed from two apertures being inserted in the thick clear glass area of the main body section.
This sculptural vase has a most unusual amorphic - and slightly space age - shape.
The glass is what would be called triple cased: with a main internal body colour of scarlet red - this is cased with a layer of dark sunshine yellow and they more confused to the base - a fluid casing of crystal clear glass which pulls up and out to form the "porthole" inclusions to each side.
It is certainly much harder to find these larger sized vintage pieces - and with no damages or chips etc.
A hard piece to photograph as it is very reflective and shiny with a bit of a mirror finish effect to the glass, and such a strange shape. Of course, my lovely vase looks much lighter and brighter in tone & colour when viewed in natural daylight.
