This is a very fine large Staffordshire figurine. This one shows The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) out for a ride on horseback.
This subject of the young Victorian prince was a perennially popular one - and a few versions of this model exist with small amendments to the composition.
This one is a particularly fine example with fine modelling (the form of the horse is certainly most delightful) and the colouring is all over and very painterly. It is a most attractive example... I love it! I also like the addition of the Prince's grey top hat resting on the rump of the horse.
This would have been a fabulous item to pop onto a fireplace in a Victorian sitting room. I have taken lots of images for your inspection.
The horse's legs are very fine indeed - and I can't believe that this delicate figurine has survived about 140 years with no damages.
It is a large size: measuring some 11 3/4 inches in height; 8 inches wide and with a depth of 2 3/4 inches.
This is a genuine antique example - and certainly not a reproduction piece. The figurine is in the good antique condition. There is a hairline cracks around the Prince's neck - this is not damage but has sadly occurred in the firing process. It does not go all around the neck area - and it is very fine, confined only to the surface. You don't see it unless under close inspection - I have taken close-up photographs for your inspection - and my much reduced price takes this into consideration.
The lettering on the base has been painted in black rather than the usual gold paint. I think that this might be original to the figurine as it ties in the the black of the reins, mane and tail. There are no other signs of the use of any gold on this model.
