LISTED ARTIST: Hermann Gross. Vintage 1970s Gouache Painting: Entitled Linsy and the Bird

This is a charming little gouache painting by the artist Hermann Gross (1904 - 1988). He was a pupil and friend of Picasso.   

He would probably be one of the most recognized German Expressionist painters today if it were not for one detail: in 1963, to the bewilderment of his friends, he left the artistic hubs of Paris and Berlin and became an artist-in-residence at a Camphill community in Aberdeen, in the north of Scotland.

Gross remains today a rather neglected artist - but his work really needs to be re-assessed. He had an interesting life and painted some rather wonderful artworks. He could have been much better known in the art world - but he chose to not play the "fame game" and remained rather private and did not seek to promote his work.

This rare little gouache painting (with black chalk drawing) by Gross is entitled in pencil (below the window mount) Linsy and the Bird. It is signed top right-hand corner in watercolour: H. Gross and dated '74.  It is typical of his style in the 1970s when he was living and working in Scotland.

My painting has recently been professionally re-framed. It has a nice fresh acid-free window mount and a good quality oak frame - and is all ready just to hang on your wall. 

It measures as follows: Image size is 21 x 25.5  cm. The frame is 58 x 42 cm.

Works by this artist are now very difficult to source - and rarely come on the market. My price for this original mid-century Scottish artwork by this internationally recognized artist is certainly a fair one.
