This is a fabulous vintage 1930s honey box that was made at Poole Pottery. It has the Carter, Stabler & Adams mark on the base.
These Deco honey boxes were originally designed by Harold Brownsword - and the wee bee finial on the lid was modelled by John Adams.
It is made of red clay - and the back stamp dates the box to 1921 - 1934.
It is in excellent condition - the inside of the box is nice and clean with no disfiguring crazing to the glaze. The base ad the lid are in good vintage condition with no chips or cracks - and the bee finial is without damage - and has not been broken off. There is a very light and minimal touch of craquelure to the clear glaze on the base - which you can see in my extreme and exaggerated close-up photograph of the marker's mark.
No staining inside from previous contents.
There are three good illustrations of these honey boxes on page 84 of 'Poole Pottery' by Hayward and Atterbury. It is worth noting that this box has its original lid - which was added when the box was made. It is not a later marriage of pieces.
The box is about 4 1/4 inches in height (including the finial) and the lid is 5 inches square.
It is Shape 941 and the pattern is the BF one.
