This is a massive shallow decorative vintage British Art Pottery bowl.
It has a diameter of 17 1/1 inches and is about 3 inches in height.
I have owned this for over 20 years now - and had it all packed away for safe-keeping. It is a unique one-off piece dating to the 1960s.
It is signed on the base; Salter 66. This relates to an English pottery that was producing artistic pots and sculptural items in this unique style in Walsall, England in the mid 1960s. Another pottery opened in Walsall in the 1980s - but this is not to be confused with the Salter Walsall production. The later pottery produces a range of shallow stoneware pots for Bonsai Trees.
I have looked all about for more information on the Salter Walsall potters - I found a small sculptural model of a horse, similar to the one on my bowl and listed for sale at just under £200. But regardless of the current lack of information on the pottery - they must have been very talented to have created such a showstopper of a piece.
It is certainly very much of its time - and fits in stylistically with the date 1966.
The bowl when flipped over has a dome-shaped base. It is made of red terracotta clay.
The design is reminiscent of some Scandinavian / Eastern European designs. The platter shows a little man / possibly a Prince or a King (dressed in a fancy ceremonial uniform) sitting on horseback. The horse has an elaborate blanket on his hindquarters which is profusely decorated with raised abstract lozenges.
I had this piece displayed in my living room for a while and resting on a large plate stand - that was the best way to display this.
This fabulous stylized dish is completely fresh to the market - and I have never quite seen another like it. A bit of a museum piece, really.
