This is certainly a most beautiful Art Deco sandwich set which is decorated with stylised images of mermaids. They are made of a fine ivory coloured early plastic.
It consists of one large oval serving platter (11 ½ x 9 inches) and a set of six matching side plates (each six inches in diameter).
Each plate is decorated with a stylised image of a mermaid lounging on a giant scallop shell engulfed in swirling waves on the sea.
This complete set is very rare and made from a white Urea Formaldehyde (one of the two materials used to make Bandalasta).
The set was from the Modern Stylists Series made by U.D.A. Plastics Ltd, England; and fully marked on the back of the largest platter as photographed.
These lovely plates date from the 1930s or early 40s - the company went into liquidation in around 1946. The set is in perfect condition.
For reference: A similar set in green sold at Christies, South Kensington, 19 March 1993 (Lot 593) for £220 - and that set had a rim chip on the oval serving platter.
