This is a really stylish vintage early 1970s bone china coffee set. It was designed by John Russell for Hostess Tableware. The pattern is a minimalistic geometric one called Greenway. The pattern features a carefully placed selection of matt olive green diamond shapes interspersed with small dots on a shiny white background. His most celebrated design for Hostess was the abstract floral pattern called "Dolly Days".
Originally a trademark of British Anchor Pottery, Hostess Tableware Ltd was formed in 1970 by a merger between Royal Stafford China and Anchor. They produced good quality earthenware and fine bone china tablewares and ceramics. The firm closed in the 1990s.
During the early 70s period, Hostess worked with some top ceramic designers including John Russell.
Russell is primarily known for his Stylecraft designs at Midwinter Pottery, where he created Midwinter “Riverside” and numerous other Midwinter designs in the 1960s. I also have a number of his red roses "Carmen" pattern available in my store.
His designs for Hostess are often more bold with clean crisp line and more minimalistic and stylised in form than the ceramics that he designed for Midwinter.
Each piece is a lovely condition with no damages. The edges are picked out with gold gilt - and this is in lovely condition with no rubbing. I have taken lots of images for your inspection.
The set consists of the following. The tall coffee pot; a milk jug and open sugar bowl, and six cups and saucers.
Dimensions: The Coffee Pot is 10 inches in height (including the knop). It is 7 1/2 inches from handle to spout. It rim at the top of the pot is 3 3/4 inches. The milk jug is just over 3 1/2 inches in height. From handle to spout it is 4 1/2 inches. The open sugar bowl is 2 3/4 inches in height. The diameter of the rim is 3 3/4 inches. The Cups are 3 inches in height - and have a rim of 3 inches. The saucers have a dimension of 3 inches.
My price here reflects the fine quality of this set - and its rarer pattern. These Hostess Tableware ceramics are beginning to get deserved interest from collectors of mid-century British ceramics.
