This is a most unusual print by the Scottish artist James McBey,
It is very much in the style of Whistler.
Indeed, the composition and pose recall Whistler's drypoints of elegant Victorian ladies.
It is a sensitive and very charming full-length portrait of Mrs William Murray who is shown wearing a long silk ball gown.
It comes from a small edition of only 56 impressions, many of which are now in international museum collections.
The print is in excellent condition with no spotting, staining or tears to the paper.
McBey has used lots of loose drypoint marks to delineate all the details in the background - and these are nice and velvety in tone - so this impression was taken before there were any signs of wear to the copperplate.
The sheet has not been glued to the backing board and is simply hinged at the top. The paper is also a most beautiful laid sheet with fine chain lines giving a subtle texture.
The print is beautifully presented with a new museum-quality, acid-free window mount. It is has also been newly re-framed
