These little antique Scottish cast iron door stops are highly sought after and most collectable - they date to the early Victorian era.
They take the form of the hero of Robert Burns' epic narrative poem, Tam O'Shanter - and his drinking partner, the cobbler Souter Johnnie.
They are 24 and 25 cm in height (about 10 inches),
Unpacked the pair is 3 kg in weight.
They are based on the life-size sculptures made by James Thom (1802-1850) in 1830 - and are now on display in Souter Johnnie's cottage in Kirkoswald.
The Thom's carvings of the Souter Johnie and his drinking companion Tam O'Shanter were taken on an exhibition tour of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London. They were received with great approval - and instigated a buoyant market for souvenirs, household articles, and decorative items based on the original models. The doorstops or fireside companions were made for smaller Scottish cottage or rustic properties.
This pair is in a fine antique condition - they are GENUINE antique examples and not copies or later reproductions. They are made of heavy cast iron which has its original polychrome decoration - there are some little old paint losses to the models here are there - acceptable in these functional antiques - and commensurate with age and use.
As you can see in fine antique condition - these are very collectable pieces of antique Scottish metalwork - and as such as on offer at a fair price.
I also have a similar pair on offer which are not coloured - and have a heavier casting.
Posting to the UK only. I would be sending these models to you very carefully packed and with Parcelforce48 - this will be about £10.
