These are a stunning large pair of brass Art Nouveau or Arts and Crafts fire dogs or antique andirons.
They are made of heavy brass with a hand heated finish - with an all-over pattern of tiny beaten dots. The are all handmade and held together with brass rivets. Such an unusual shape - to me they look like little cat-like animals with two front legs and a shared single back leg... all ready to run about when you are not looking. I hope that I have been able to capture their most quirky shape in my photographs.
Each fire dog has a little decorative oval finial on each one which takes the form of a lozenge and has a little raised floral decoration - almost like a French Fleur de Lis.
These are really a most decorative pair and date from the late 19th century.
Stylistically they are very Victorian, and the design is very Arts and Crafts meets Art Nouveau in style.
HISTORY: An andiron or firedog is a bracket support, normally found in pairs, on which logs are laid for burning in an open fireplace, so that air may circulate under the firewood, allowing better burning and less smoke. They can also e used to lay down your fireside tools - such as fire poker, coal tongs or ashes shovel etc.
Length – back to front: 9 inches. Height is 14 inches. Width at widest is 8 inches.
The oval deocrative lozenges are 3 3/4 inches x 2 1/2 inches.
A fine sturdy pair which are in excellent condition - will make a very useful and decorative addition to any historic open fireplace.
These come from my own personal collection and have been in my house for the last 20 year - will be sent in nice clean condition with a light patina of age.
They are certainly well made as you can see from my images - and the pair are 2kg in weight unpacked.
