This is a fabulous piece of 1930s glass made by the British company, James A. Jobling & Co in the North East of England. The company were best known in Britain for making decorative glass in the style of Lalique. They certainly made some very fine glass similar in finish to opalescent pieces made by Lalique, Sabino, and Etling, Paris.
This elephant is a moulded figurine. It has a registered number for the design: No. 79570. It was designed for Jobling by the glass maestro - Etienne Frankenhauser. It was initially created as a plaster prototype in the early 1930s and later made using Jobling's new opalescent glass called Opalique (which they registered under this name on 25 March 1935). This is probably one of Frankenhauser's finest works for Jobling.
This stunning elephant figure was made for only a short time between 1935 and 1939. This elephant model measures 4 inches in height, is 5 3/4 inches long, and 2 1/2 inches wide. It is 480 grams in weight (unpacked). There is also another variant of this figure - where the same elephant is shown standing on a thick oblong plinth.
My elephant has no damage of any kind and is in perfect condition, as can be seen in my photographs.
These special Jobling elephants do not come on the market very often. This is certainly a piece for the more specialist collector - my price reflects its relative rarity and exceptional condition.
