This is a very rare model of a seated poodle which dates to the 1950s.
It was made by Foley Pottery and is fully marked on the base, as photographed.
Shelley's original pottery was run by Wileman, who started to use the Foley name sometime around the late Victorian and the early 1900s. This caused some confusion as there were about six potteries all using the Foley name! This was resolved in 1923 when Elijah Brain (EBC) was given the sole right to use the Foley name. Wileman then changed its name from Foley to Shelley and the rest is history.
The model is a fine one and takes the form of a stylized poodle who is seated. He is a tall and slender dog and has painted black curls on his head, and chest - the ones on his chest are filled in with yellow. His little back legs are tucked in behind him and his little pom-pom tail sticks out at the back.
The poodle was designed by Donald Brindley (as marked on the base), Foley's chief designer, along with a cockerel and a cat figurine. The poodles came in two different shapes and (I think) two different sizes.
Many thanks to the Foley expert, David Encill for providing me with extra historical information on this item.
As you can see - he is uber-cute and in perfect condition. A nice size for display - and measures about 9 inches in height.
Unpacked he is nearly 500 grams - so I would be able to post Mr Poodle worldwide. The postage quoted here is for next-day special delivery postage to the UK. This will be priced at £10 and applied to your order at the checkout.
