This is a very rare set of matching ceramics - which are for a single place setting - and as for the sole use by one person - it is called a Batchelor Set.
It dates to the 1950s - and is certainly a most iconic mid-century modern design with an abstract pattern resembling ferns. The red and white colour was certainly very popular in modernist 1950s houses. The marker is the British company, Burleigh Ware. The red colour is over-glaze painted by hand - and is a glossy enamel red colour.
This interesting set is being sold here as a complete set - would be such a shame to break this up - as I bet you won't find all the pieces individually so easily. This pattern is more commonly found on decorative pieces such as vases - rather than tableware items. So there is certainly a rarity value to these pieces as a group.
All pieces are generally good vintage condition with no chips or cracks - some fine and light areas of craquelure to the glaze here and there - but a nice display set and a fabulous mid-century design.
Great for special Sunday breakfasts - if you live alone - or perhaps just for display in a cabinet or on a kitchen shelf.
Let me break down the price for you and tell you all the items that make up this set - I can only put ten photographs on the listing - but can provide more for serious interest in the set.
1: The Toast Rack. is 7 inches long 3 inches high and 3 1/2 inches wide: £20
2: The Cruet / Egg Cup Set - with pepper pot, mustard pot, open salt (or egg cup) all on original stand. 7 1/4 inches long; 3 1/4 inches in height and 3 inches wide): £25
3: Milk Jug (handle to spout ) is 5 1/2 inches and the height is 3 1/4 inches. The Open Sugar Bowl is 3 3/4 inches in diameter and 2 inches in height: £20
4: Trio: Cup and Saucer and wee plate: Side plate 7 inches, Saucers is 5 3/4 inches diameter. The cup is 3 1/4 inches in diameter and 2 3/4 inches in height. £15
5: LIttle Cereal Bowl measures 6 1/4 inches in diameter and has a height of 1 1/2 inches: £10
6: Larger Side Plate with a Diameter of 8 3/4 inches: £10
7: Tall Water Pot or Tea Pot. Height is 5 1/4 inches and the diameter id 3 1/4 inches (there is a slight area of craquelure to the glaze, but nothing disfiguring: £30
8: Bowl (with a fitted lid) which is heated with hot water inside it. Handle to Handle is 9 inches and the height is 3 inches. : £25
So this totals up to a very fair £155 for all the items. Postage would be capped at £10.
These 50s designs are now highly sought after and now getting harder to find in such lovely vintage condition.
