This is a highly collectable vintage mirror made in the 1950s by E Gomme Ltd of High Wycombe - It would have originally had an old paper label on the back - but this is most definitely a vintage Gomme piece (I know this as I have previously sold a completely identical one with the label intact).
Gomme Ltd was a furniture company responsible for producing the celebrated G-Plan range of furniture in the 50s and was at this time one of the UK's largest furniture manufacturers.
The designer, Donald Gomme first introduced in 1953 a range of modern furniture for the entire house. Pieces could be bought piece by piece according to your budget. The G-Plan name was coined by Doris Gundry of the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, and the furniture was advertised in magazines and in cinemas direct to the public.
Designs were available for several years so people could collect them slowly, and all the furniture was marked with the distinctive brand mark.
This gilt, sunburst convex mirror is now so much harder to find and is highly sought after.
It is in excellent condition and looks fantastic on display (there are two tiny bits of restorations to a couple of the tips at the edge). I have priced this accordingly - if perfect these retail for nearer the £500 mark. Please look carefully at all my photographs as I have taken close-up images of the two little restored tips on the outer ring section.
It has an overall diameter of 18 3/4 inches. The diameter of the mirror is 7 inches.
There are two rings of sun rays around the central mirror section - with the inner ring raised.
These pieces of mid-century class British furniture are now hot collectables - and this is reflected in my asking price, which is certainly a fair one.
A great statement piece in a Scandinavian influenced mid-century interior - needs a good bit of display space around it for it to look it's best in your sitting room.
Certainly a very substantial piece- and it weighs nearly 3 kg unpacked.
Sadly, due to the weight - it is going to be restricted to posting to UK only.
