This is a such a sweet little 1860s Staffordshire figurine. It is very decorative and celebrates the life of the Northumberland heroine Grace Darling.
She was the daughter of the lighthouse keeper at the Farne Islands. One evening (Septmber 1838) she spotted the wreckage of a ship washed on my nearby rocks. With her father she rowed out in a little boat and rescued nine of the survivors taking them back in the boat to the lighthouse.
This little model show Grace and her father setting off across the choppy waters to help the shipwrecks.
There are little applied areas of bocage scattered here and there across to figure to add texture to it. The figure is in good antique condition - mostly decorated to the front. There is a bit of glue on the base where someone has stuck on a covering at some point in the past. I could try and remove this is you wish. I have photographed this.
Dimensions: height to top of lighthouse is 6 1/2 inches. The width is 6 inches and the depth of the oval base is 3 1/2 inches.
This model features in the book 'Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding, page 55, figure 120. It is a rather figurine and does not come up for sale that often. It would look great on display in a little seaside cottage. The condition and rarity are reflected in my asking price.
The little Staffordshire model will be carefully packed and sent to you with Royal Mail Tracked (Small Parcel). This will be applied to your order at the checkout. .
