This is a fine little black chalk landscape sketch by the celebrated printmaker, Sir Muirhead Bone (1876 - 1953).
Muirhead Bone was born in Partick, Glasgow, and trained as an architect. He attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art and was self-taught as an etcher.
In 1901 he settled in London, where he quickly established an international reputation, selling prints for large sums. He produced nearly 500 prints and was knighted in 1937.
This little landscape study is very typical of his drawing style. It is a quick sketch showing a row of little Scottish cottages sitting low down in a panoramic landscape. I am thinking that the scene is probably on one of the Western Scottish Isles as there are no signs or trees and there is a rocky breakwater to the front and a hint of the sea.
A fine study by Bone and signed lower right-hand corner: M Bone. It is in excellent condition with no issues. The study is sold framed. It has a new window mount and a simple brown wooden frame surround.
Dimensions: frame size is 23 x 29 cm. The image size is 6.8 x 14.5 cm
It is drawn on a buff-coloured Ingres-type paper. The paper that the drawing is on is certainly a bit darker and more amber-toned (more of a light tan shade) which is apparent in my photographs.
