This is a very beautiful original drypoint etching by the celebrated Scottish artist, Ian Strang (1886-1952). It is pencil signed by the artist, lower right - but not edition numbered.

It is one of two etchings that Strang made of the site. This one is in portrait format - and another shows a more panoramic view in landscape format.

The image shows the Fishmonger's Hall on the banks of the River Thames in London. It is the home of the Fishmongers’ Company, one of the oldest and most ancient Livery Companies of the City of London.

The building is adjacent to London Bridge (seen on the right-hand edge of Stang's etching). Built-in the 1830s, it is one of the City's most imposing Greek Revival buildings - an earlier building on his site had been demolished to allow for the construction of the new London Bridge.

The new Hall had a ground floor that was designed to sit at the high street level. The design had a large basement consisting of five arched bays that extend upwards from the top of the Thames, Above, the facade is divided up by six tall Ionic columns supporting a pediment that is backed by a balustrade.

Ian Strang was the eldest son of William Strang, the internationally known etcher. He specialized in topographical subjects. Strang studied at the Slade School of Art from 1902 until 1906 and then at the Académie Julian in Paris, 1906–8.

This is a lovely impression with lots of rich sooty drypoint - it must be an early pull from the plate. Early impressions in the series run and pulled by Strang have much more atmosphere with rich plate tones with tones and shadows caused by the ink left on the plate and velvety drypoint lines made by the burr on the copper.

There are no condition issues with the work - and it is framed all ready to hang on your wall.

Dimensions: 27.5 x 22.5 cm. The frame is 53.5 x 44  cm

The work had originally been sold via the prestigious private art gallery in Edinburgh - Bourne Fine Art (their label is present on the back of the frame).

A great decorative subject if you have a house or flat in one of the converted warehouses down on the Thames.

It will be sent to you with Parcelforce24. This will cost £10 and be applied to your order at the checkout.
