This is a stylish piece of 1960s Scottish Caithness Glass.
This decanter is a Morven Decanter, which was designed by Domhnall O'Broin in 1964. The glass colour is a smoky brown one called Peat. The decanter was made in either clear or this peat colour - to enhance the colour of the whisky inside.
The decanter comes to a pair of larger whisky tumblers, as photographed. These are large enough to give you a good dram of whisky and a few large cubes of ice or chilled water. It was always a popular design and sold well up until the 1980s. It is considered a Scottish design icon and one is currently on display at the Scottish Design Gallery at the V&A in Dundee.
BIOGRAPHY: Domhnall Pádraig Ó Broin was born in Waterford, Eire, on 11 March 1934.
From 1952 to 1954, he studied glass chemistry and design at Orrefors in Sweden. He became a master engraver and was an important designer of Waterford cut designs. On completing his apprenticeship at Waterford, he was awarded an Andrew Grant scholarship and continued to study glass technology and design at Sheffield and Edinburgh universities, and also glass design under the woderful Helen Monro Turner at Edinburgh College of Art.
While at ECA, he met Robin Sinclair who was planning to open a new glassworks in Caithness, Scotland. Domhnall was a significant factor in establishing Caithness Glass in Wick. In 1965, he was the only designer at Caithness - but left in 1966 when he emigrated to the USA. He only designed for Caithness for a very short period of time.
I am listing his minimalistic decanter at £35 - and the matching Peat colour whisky tumbers will be £7.50 each.
The decanter is in excellent condition. I just love that chunky stopper - which can also serve as a little shot glass - genius!
Measures approx 10 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches in diameter at widest point. The decanter is pattern number 4025,
A Morven Decanter is illustrated in the book "Caithness Glass" by Mark Hill, page 38.
My fine decanter is in good vintage condition with no chips or cracks. The clean lines of this lovely piece of glass would look excellent on a teak or rosewood mid-century Scandi-Modern bureau. There is no staining or clouding to the inside of the glass. It is nice and clean.
It has been a little tricky to photograph this item - so hope that my photographs do it justice.
The decanter and pair of glasses will be sent to you with Royal Mail Tracked Parcel (Medium size). This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
