On offer are these two bowls made at Cainthess Glass in the 1960s.
They are both made at Caithness Glass in the 1960s. The glass colour is a smoky brown one called Peat. They would look good to serve nuts and crisps and put out on a table beside the Peat coloured decanter and whisky glasses.
Both bowls are in good condition with no chips, cracks or scratches to the surface. The squat shaped bowl with the low shorter sides is cased with thick clear glass on the base. Both pieces were designed by Domhnall O'Broin (1934 - 2005) in the mid 60s. He made a significant contribution to Scottish glass, glass design and glass technology.
The bowl measures 2 1/4 inches in height and the diameter is 5 3/4 inches. The spherical bowl is harder to find as it was discontinued in the 1970s. It measures 4 1/4 inches in height and with a diameter at the widest point of 5 1/2 inches. The rim is 3 1/2 inches. They have a good bit of weight to them - both coming in at 1.6 kg. Interest in O'Broin's design is growing and prices are now starting to rise as these fine minimalistic pieces are being given due appreciation. They certainly look fabulous with your Scandi-modern furniture.
I am listing this pair at £15 each. They are both in excellent condition with no damages.
BIOGRAPHY: Domhnall Pádraig Ó Broin was born in Waterford, Eire, on 11 March 1934.
From 1952 to 1954, he studied glass chemistry and design at Orrefors in Sweden. He became a master engraver and was an important designer of Waterford cut designs. On completing his apprenticeship at Waterford, he was awarded an Andrew Grant scholarship and continued to study glass technology and design at Sheffield and Edinburgh universities, and also glass design under the woderful Helen Monro Turner at Edinburgh College of Art.
While at ECA, he met Robin Sinclair who was planning to open a new glassworks in Caithness, Scotland. Domhnall was a significant factor in establishing Caithness Glass in Wick. In 1965, he was the only designer at Caithness - but left in 1966 when he emigrated to the USA. He only designed for Caithness for a very short period of time.
Please also see my Morven decanter listed on my site - a Scottish glass classic design! Example of his glasswares are on display at the V&A in Dundee.
