This is a decorative jam or marmalade stoneware lidded pot which was made by Buchan Pottery, who were based at Portobello, near Edinburgh (now closed).
It dates on stylistic grounds to the 1950s.
The jam pot comes complete with its original lid which has the word Sample painted on it. The lid has a built in handle. The base of the pot is also marked as being a Sample piece. It is in perfect condition. The design on the pot is the attractive Brittany pattern. This features an attractive coloured apple surrounded by a quickly painted oval frame; on the other side there is a pear which is also painted in similar vibrant colours. There are three vertical blue lines crossed by blue spars at either side of the fruits. Despite being nearly 75 years old - it is suprisingly very modern in feel.
It is a more special jam pot, as the sample annotations on the lid and body reveals they were special pieces.. The pottery would have kept a design sample for reference purposes to show potters and decorators what the final item should look like. These sample pieces could also be shown to prospective clients to show them a sample of what the items in their orders might look like before being made up.
My pot measures 4 1/4 inches in height. The rim is 3 inches in diameter and the base is 2 3/4 inches. I have two of thise listed. This one has straighter sides (my other one is more bulbous).
It is harder to find jam pots in this pattern - and even more so as sample pieces. This is reflected in my asking price.
It would be be posted to you with Royal Mail Tracked Post (Small Parcel). This would be applied to your order at checkout. Postage discounts can by given if you would like more than one piece of my fine Buchanwares.
