This is an attractive piece of Scottish stoneware. It lovely round tactile shape with a short spout. It is decorated with the very attractive atomic pattern called Hebrides. The design certainly has a Festival of Britian feel to the pattern.
It was made by Buchan Pottery, who were based at Portobello, near Edinburgh (now closed).
The jug is a good size for a shared breakfast or dining table. It measures 4 3/4 inches in height and has a diameter of 4 1/2 inches at the widest point. Handle to spout is 6 1/2 inches. Unpacked it is 550 grams.
It is also rarer as it has been marked with the word "sample" which runs inside the rin, as photographed. The pottery would have kept a design sample for reference purposes to show potters and decorators what the final item should look like. These sample pieces could also be shown to prospective clients to show them a sample of what the items in their orders might look like before being made up.
My jug is excellent vintage condition with no chips or damages and nice and clean inside with no staining etc. My price takes into account its sample status at the Portobello factory.
It will be sent to you with Royal Mail Tracked, Small Parcel. This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
