This is a large Buchan stoneware jug decorated with the traditional blue Iona pattern. I have taken photographs of my large Iona pot standing next to the slightly taller and thinner one. Both are currently available in my store.
This tall mid-century vintage stoneware handled jug or pitcher was made by Buchan Pottery, who were based at Portobello, near Edinburgh (now closed).
It is certainly large piece of Scottish Pottery. Standing at 8 inches in height. It has a diameter at the base of 5 1/4 inches. The rim has a diameter of 5 1/2 inches. From handle to spout it is 6 1/4 inches. It weights 1.3 kg unpacked.
This lovely pattern is a more traditional abstract one called Iona. It features random swirls in blue and green. These look like the waves on the sea found around the Scottish island on Iona.
Apart from its large size, it is also a special piece as it is marked (in the factory) "Sample" along the length of the handle, as photographed. These sample pieces would have been held at the factory as reference pieces showing what the finished designs should look like - or as sample to show potential clients for them to select products to stock in their china shops.
Obviously, these sample pieces are rarer items to find. This is all reflected in my asking price. It is a traditionally popular pattern in the Buchan Stoneware range and is a great piece for a more traditional farmhouse kitchen.
A fine large pitcher that would make a fabulous vase for tall flowers. in excellent vintage condition. Postage will be with Royal Mail Tracked (Medium Parcel) and applied to your order at the checkout.
