This is another rare piece of Buchan stoneware dating to the late 1950s or early 1960s. It was made by Buchan Pottery, who were based at Portobello, near Edinburgh (now closed).
It is a large cylindrical stoneware vase and it is very substantial in form. It is an attractive piece of Scottish stoneware and again it is a rarer pattner. I have seen another example with this quirky abstract pattern, but these do not turn up for sale that often.
The vase is 8 inches in height. The diameter at the based is 5 1/2 inches and the rim at the top is smaller coming in at 4 1/2 inches. It is a heavy piece and unpacked it weights 1.3 kg. . I have a couple of little pin dishes listed with a similar knotwork pattern. It is fully marked with the usual Buchan Portobello pottery mark on the base, as photographed.
The body of the vase has the typical grey-blue satin finish. The unusual thing about this piece of Buchan is the decorative band around the base. They are looking at more abstract atomic designs. They are probably trying to attract a younger market to their ceramics - and are producing patterns far removed from their traditional fare. The pattern reminds me of a more naive verson of Freeform ones used at this time by Poole Pottery. The red and yellow abstract patterns appear on both sides. Down each side runs a vertical strip with a grey geometric shape framing this border line.
It has no damages of kind and is in pristine condition.
My price takes into its attractive design, condition and also its rarity. You might not find another like it too easily
