This is a lovely large stoneware decorative Hebrides bowl made by Buchan Pottery, who were based at Portobello, near Edinburgh (now closed).
The pottery was established in Portobello in 1867 and ceasted production there in 1972. The pottery then relocated to Crieff and permanently closed in 2000.
My hughe bowl is certainly a most substantial piece of Scottish Pottery. It measures 11 3/4 cn (30 cm) and has a height of 4 1/4 inches (11 cm), Unpacked it is 1.7 kg.
It is a particularly rare example - and it is marked on the side: SAMPLE, as photographed. I have never seen a Portobello bowl before of this extraordinary size. This is reflected in my asking price. It is excellent condition, indeed as good as new.
This lovely pattern called Hebrides - this features a stylised abstract pattern of yellow and blue zigzag lines and stripes. A traditionally popular pattern in the Buchan Stoneware range with a good mid-century modern feel to the design.
