This is a rare vintage Scottish pottery table lamp.
It was designed by Highland Stoneware and probably dates to around the late 1990s.
The puffin design was first developed by Rae Phipps in 1988 and he based his early Puffin designs on a plate painted for Save the Children.
The puffin images, to me, are some of the most endearing ones in the Highland Stoneware range. This one shows a close-up of a large puffin who is depicted standing on a rock. You turn the lamp around and to the back and side is a beautiful hand-painted Scottish seascape with perhaps a distant view of Skye. There is also on the reverse another little puffin shown in mid-flight with his wings completely outstretched. In excellent condition and the design certainly remains a fine one - and a timeless! one
A similar lamp of this size by Phipps is illustrated on page 76 in the 1999 publication of the book on Highland Stoneware by Malcolm Haslam. The painter's mark on the base of my lamp is also for Rae Phipps - and shows an entwined R and P. It is also stamped on the base: Highland Stoneware.
There is a brass bulb holder that is earthed - and the lamp has a long length of thick white electric cable. I would say that there are over three meters of cable on the lamp - so if you have limited access to sockets in the house - this lamp can be placed quite far away from your power source.
I have taken a lot of photographs for your inspection.
CONDITION: No damages, nice and clean, and ready to use. These late 1990s puffin lamps by Phipps are now hard to find and this is reflected in my asking price. Just need a little simple grey shade and it will grace any interior.
Dimensions: the height without the bulb holder is 7 inches. The diameter of the base is 4 1/4 inches. The diameter at the widest point is 7 inches. The height including the bulb holder is 9 inches.
