This is a stylish Scottish studio pottery lidded pot by John Maguire. He was born in Kenya in 1962 and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1981 - 1985. He graduated with a B.A. Hons in Ceramics. In 1995 he was awarded a grant from the Scottish Arts Council and was also Artist in Residence at Glasgow School of Art. All his ceramics are made from a white stoneware clay and he creates beautiful glazes using cobalt wood-ash glazes with over-sprays of copper and titanium.
This is a very stylish lidded pot or jar by Maguire. It is made of white clay and has his customary blue / purple flambe glazes. The lid is more of a dark claret shade and from it issues a curled knop which regularly feature on his lidded jars.
Not only is this studio lidded vase aesthetically pleasing - but is also a functional piece and would like fabulous on a bureau in a sitting room - or equally at home on a shelf in a kitchen.
It is 8 1/4 inches in height (to top of the knop on the lid). The main body section is 6 1/2 inches in height and has a diameter of 6 inches at the widest. The diameter of the rim is 4 1/4 inches and the base is 3 1/2 inches.
It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. It has the impressed maker's stamp on the base, as well as an old printed gold sticker with artist's name and address.
