On offer here are two stylish pieces of vintage Scottish pottery by Tom Lochhead (1917 - 2005).
We have a little lidded jam pot and a matching little cream jug.
Lochhead was considered the godfather of Scottish studio ceramics.
In 1936 - he attended Edinburgh College of Art. He left college in 1941 and in 1948 he set up his first kiln at the Old Mill in Kirkcudbright. He was attracted to the town's lively artistic community - and he helped set up a summer school in the Royal Burgh which ran for almost 30 years - and attracted many distinguished Scottish artists, such as John Maxwell. Tom was a good friend of the artist Jessie M King, who nicknamed him "the prophet" as he was not only a committed Christian - but also had long, flowing hair and served as a local evangelical preacher.
His work is still much undervalued today - and you can still acquire pieces by this most accomplished Scottish ceramic artist relatively cheaply. This will probably not continued for much longer as more specialist interest is currently being placed on late 20th-century Scottish art and design.
Dimensions: Jam Pot: 3 ¾ inches in height and with a diameter of 3 ¼ inches. Small Jug or Creamer: 3 inches in height and 2 ½ inches in diameter.
Both pots are lovely examples of Lochhead's craft and are sold in excellent condition.
