This is a rare large heavy ceramic teapot, made by Buchan Pottery, based at Portobello, near Edinburgh (now closed).
It is certainly a most substantial piece of Scottish Pottery.
This teapot is a late pattern, probably produced after the Portobello factory closed in 1972 and manufacturing moved to Crieff. The backstamp as no reference to it being made at Portobello or the factory being A. W. Buchan & Co. Also the style of the decoration seems to suggest a date of around the mid 1980s which would fit with it being made at Crieff. (Just to confuse things Buchan did continue of use a backstamp with Portobello on it when they were at Crieff!).
Anyway, this stoneware teapot seems to be a rare piece and these do not seem to have been produced in large numbers. The glaze is a simple white on and the decoration is applied spongeware large dots, all hand applied - as some are smudged. The pattern is called "New Town".
The design is not typical of Buchan wares and I am assuming that this rarer pattern was part of a very low production run.
I have a couple of other "Newtown" pieces listed on my site. My price takes into consideration the rarity of the shape and pattern, and the fact that they are in pristine condition. This one is probably more of a special piece for the specialist collector of Buchan pottery - or as a museum piece.
Dimensions: The pot is 5 3/4 inches in height and has a diameter of 6 inches. From handle to spout it is 9 3/4 inches.
