This is a rare vintage brooch which was made by the Shetland-based silversmith George Malcolm Smith in the 1970s. It is a designer made piece and takes the form of a thistle with the masks representing comedy and tragedy. These represent the greek Museus Thalia (Comedy) and Melpomene (Tragedy). Pieces like this are often referred to as "Thespian," "Drama," or "Sock & Buskin" brooches
It is marked on the reverse: SILVER and has the maker's initials GMS in a wee lozenge. Many of his designs were used by Ola Gorie after his retirement - and he is associated with the early designs produced at Ortak.
This design is probably one which was specially commissioned and is possibly unique. GM Smith's brooches typically feature classic Scottish, Celtic, and Nordic or Viking motifs.
Dimensions: The width is 3.5 cm and the height is 3.8 cm.
