I just love this old copper tray - but sadly I have been unable to find out that much about it.
It reminds me of pieces with dragons on it designed by WH Mawson for Keswick Home Industries / Keswick School Of Industrial Art and dates to around 1900. They did make a lot of large copper trays decorated with organic forms and planished work. But it is unsigned so I am just going to list it as a rather fabulous tray.
The tray has a folded edge around it - this is just under an inch in height. The top of the tray is decorated with lots of repousee work with a large wheel shape in the center and undulating lines all around. Entangled in these lines are seven little stylised dragons or sea serpents. The background has been planished all over and enlivened with lots of tiny dots to give texture. I just love those strange little mystical creatures .. they are totally delightful.
There is a later soldered hoop on the back - so that you can hang the tray easily on your wall on a long nail. The charger is made of a thick gauge of copper and has a good weight to it - it is certainly a substantial and well crafted piece.
I am pricing it as an early 20th century piece of Arts and Crafts metalware - and in such lovely condition. It is a one-off hand crafted tray. It is a fair price.. I hope!
