Sadly, I only have one of these stunning French ceramic Art Deco Panthers. There would have originally been two of them - and they would have formed a pair of bookends. It might be a handy item to buy if you have another and wish to marry them up to make the pair up again.
This one has in incised signature "Lemenceau" on the side, as photographed and printed in green "France" on the inside. The designer is Charles Lemenceau (1905-1980) and these 1930s ceramics by him are rather rare and hard to find. It would have been made at St Clement just outside of Paris.
It has a crackleware glaze, and the panther bookend is as featured in the book "Les Craquelés Art Déco" (page 285) by Alain-René Hardy and Bruno Giardi. The glaze has a pale yellow colour where it pools in the edges of the figure. It has no chips or cracks. The use of slightly coloured crackle glazes are common of Lemenceau models of the 1930s. Although sturdy looking - these pieces have a certain fragility to them - so I would not be looking to post outside of the UK.
It is in fine antique condition and certainly displays well. Since it is missing its partner - I am selling this one at a very reasonable £95.
It would probably have had a felt base on it when first produced. It is without this now. I could add a nice replacement green felt base covering to the base if you would like me to do that for you.
A pair of these bookends belonged to the celebrated author, Jackie Collins - and were auctioned at her estate sale in Los Angeles 9n 2017.
It measures 9 1/2 inches in length and is 8 1/6 inches in height. It has a depth of 3 inches.
