This is a very strange piece of studio or art pottery.
It looks from the design and structure that it is Scandinavian in origin.
It takes the form of a shallow bowl - which is made from a heavy slab of pottery with a slight circular indentation in the centre.
The design in the centre shows two abstract fish - swimming in opposite directions.
The whole upper surface of the dish is covered in a pattern of little pastel coloured interlocking oval shapes - which to me looks like the texture of shagreen.
It measures: 7 1/2 inches square (19 cm) and with a depth of 1 1/2
The dish is very thickly made and has a good weight to it - unpacked it is 920 grams.
I am not familiar with the maker's mark on the back of the dish - but the mark's on the reverse certainly look Swedish or Danish in style to me.
A very unusual plate - and I have been unable to find another like it.
A stunning and most unique piece of art pottery which is reflected in my asking price.
