This is an attractive pewter vase by Walker & Company of Sheffield. It has twin handles - which (to me) resemble long plant tendrils - they sweep down from the tubular neck onto the base section of the vase. I feel that the company probably copied these handles from ones designed by Knox.
The surface is planished and covered all over with little decorative hammered marks.
It is marked to the base: English Pewter / Walker & Co / Homeland / 7051.
The metal has not been highly polished but has a nice shine to it - it is a darker grey tone rather than a bright silver.
My vase is in excellent antique condition with no damages, scratches or dents. It is perhaps more simple in design than pewter wares made by Archibald Knox or WMF - and this is reflected in my asking price.
Walker & Co was launched in 1909 in as an electro-plate cutlery manufacturer. The owner was Sheffield-born Herbert Walker (1877-1951). During the First World War, Walker & Co operated from Cambridge Street in Sheffield. Between 1919 and 1938, the address was Homeland Works, Button Lane.
Walker & Co was liquidated in 1938, when it sold its plant and marks: ‘HOMELAND’ and ‘I WILL’ (Sheffield Daily Independent, 8 February 1938).
Dimensions: The height is 8 inches. From handle to handle it is 6 1/4 inches. The rim at the top is 2 1/2 inches in diameter.
