This is a stylish piece of vintage modern Scandinavian silver jewellery.
It was designed by Niel Erik From (N.E. From). Although he opened a shop in 1931, it was not until 1944 that From registered his first smithy and started to increase production. Most of his sough-after modernist and brutalist designs were produced in the 1960s and 1970s. His later pieces often have clean lines with geometric and abstract shapes.
He liked to pair ebony or dark onyx inclusions with a 925 silver torque (a rigid open-ended collar). The shiny dark colour of the black onyx pendant set off againt the polished silver was certainly much favoured in Danish jewellery designs at this time.
From died in 1982 and the company was taken over by his son-in-law. Sadly, with the death of its founder the business lost customers and inherently its profitability and it closed in 1990. From this date From's jewellery has become more collectable and there has been an increased demand for his mid-century designs.
My necklace is in excellent condition. The onyx drop is shiny and black with no scratches or marks - it is fully backed with silver and has the maker's name stamped on the back. The end of the silver toque is also marked: From 925.
Dimensions; The onyx embellishment 3 cm height with a width of 2.5 cm. The silver torque is open and easily fits onto an average sized neck. It has an overall length of roughly 14 inches.
