This is one of two similar red genie bottles that I have on my website. This vase was made in the 1960s by Empoli glass, Italy. It is a clear ruby red coloured glass. The sides of the genie vase are smooth with no decorative patterns or motifs. It is certainly a very attractive minimalistic piece of vintage glass.
Empoli is a region in the west of Italy, southwest of Florence in the province of Tuscany. Empoli has been producing and exporting glass since the 14th century.
For centuries, green glass was a trademark colour of Empoli. The Empoli green, known as “Empoli Verde" was created from the iron that occurred locally in the sands of the Empoli region. Pieces of Empoli glass as not often marked as such - and in the past might have had a Made in Italy sticker or paper label but this is now often missing.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Empoli glass manufacturers moved away from their traditional green glassware, and began producing modern brightly coloured glass and pieces of vibrant cased glass covered in a thick layer of clear glass,
My Genie Bottle vase is a nice simple and stylish shape which tapers gently to the collared neck at the top. The stopper is a lovely tapered flame shape and sits in the neck of the bottle - it has been hand-blown and is original to the base section.
There are no damages to my Genie bottle - and it certainly looks fabulous on display in a mid-century modern interior. They are now getting hard to find and are collectable bits of vintage Italian Glass.
It has no chips or cracks.
The overall height (including the stopper) is 16 inches. The stopper measures a total of 6 inches. The base measures 4 3/4 inches in diameter. The rim at the top is 2 inches in diameter
