This is certainly a fine antique drypoint etching. It is signed in the plate: J.J. Tissot and dated 1880. It is the only state of this print and my one is a good impression with lots of velvety dark tones and fine drypoint lines. There is an excellent contrast between light and shade in the composition. It is an original 19th-century impression from an edition of 100. It has a nice crisp platemark.
The Belle Epoque image encapsulates the lazy days of a hot summer. A young French lady is shown out in her garden, resting in a hammock hung from the branches of a large Chestnut tree. She takes shelter from the sun under the canopy of the leaves.
She has been walking in the sun and an open Japanese parasol lies on the ground beside her. There is also a little Oriental bamboo table beside her. She is reading a book - her wistful glaze would suggest that it might be a work of modern Romantic fiction. She is probably a young mum (she wears a wedding ring) as two children are seen playing in the distance.
This is one of Tissot's most popular prints and as such are always keenly sought after. This one is in lovely condition with no marking to the sheet and it has not been laid down in the past. We have had it reframed and with a new acid-free window mount. It is all ready to hang on your wall.
