This is a fabulous piece of 1930s design. It is a rare round Art Deco Lidded Box - I think probably a powder bowl.

The top section is made of a polished white early plastic material and the bottle half is in black. It is certainly very tactile - all lovely and smooth like a pebble.

I love the cute finger holes in the black lid - these are decorative and also help you to lift the lid off with ease. The lid has a little thread underneath which allows you to gently screw it off and locks the lid on tight when not in use.

These are very similar to the better known ashtrays which were used on the ocean liner, the Queen Mary. Stamped to the base: Made in England / BEX. Bex was a brand name associated with British Xylonite Ltd. The National Archives holds records related to BX Plastics and its constituent companies, including BXL Records of Bakelite Xylonite Ltd.

The company is perhaps best known for its later production of plastic beehive yarn holders.

This little lidded bowl is certainly in lovely condition and they are now highly sought after. It is listed at a fair price given its rarity

Diameter is 5 1/2 inches - and the height is just under 3 inches. Weight unpacked is 300 grams.

Any postage quotes here is of course for tracked and signed for post with the Royal Mail. This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
