This a very rare vintage lidded serving dish or tureen. It is from a range that is keenly sought-after and is a top-quality modernist Scandinavian design.
I have a number of dishes and plates in this pattern available in my online shop.
They were made for the Finnish ceramics company: Arabia in the 1960s. The shape was designed by Ulla Procope and is very similar to her Ruska pieces. The pattern is by Anna (Anja) Jaatinen Winquist. Her initials are hand-painted on the reverse of each piece, as photographed.
Anja Jaatinen-Winquist was born in 1934. She started working at Arabia Finland in the late 1960s while the company was going through a rapid period of change and expansion, and she continued working there in the product design department until 1974.
She designed several tableware services for Arabia including the M model “Karelia” with its iron oxide decoration, “Saara” (in production 1971-1976), and also Kalevala, and Paju (which came in both blue and yellow variations).
The pattern on my items is called "Paju" (or Willow) and it is in the blue and blue colour variant. The blue decoration on each piece is all hand painted, resulting in a slight difference in every piece.
My large bowl (Liemikulho in Finnish) measures 5 3/4 inches in height including the lid and is 8 3/4 inches from handle to handle. The main body diameter is 7 inches. It has no damage or any kind. This one is exceptionally rare - and this is reflected in my price.
Given the lovely condition of all my Paju items - my asking price for each piece is certainly a fair one.
