This is a very sweet little pair of Dutch boy and girl bookends.
They date to around the 1930s or early 1940s.
One is marked: Foreign.
They are made of ceramic - and there is a little hole in the base of each one with a little cork stopper - this is where you would fill each bookend with sand to give it extra weight - which would be needed to keep a wee selection of your favourite paperbacks in place on your shelf.
The modelling and decoration are so charming - each little figure holds in their hand a little posy of spring blooms.
They were traditional Dutch national costume. Cute little black clogs and Dutch headwear. The colours are muted and typical of the more muted palettes used at the beginning of the 20th Century.
They measure as follows: 5 inches in height and 4 1/2 inches long.
Both are in perfect condition with no damages.
Rare survivors - and you probably won't find exactly the same. Now nearly 90 years old! look like they were made yesterday. Adorable!
