This is a lovely and very subtle West German abstract vase.
The main body section is coated with a French blue matt glaze with abstract patterns and stripes applied on top of the blue ground and is a matt silvery-black and the geometric shapes are all slightly raised up. The pattern was created using a wax resist technique.
Ankara was achieved using the wax resist technique. The decor was created for Carstens by Helmut Scholtis in 1963 and became one of the company's most popular and artistically successful designs. The line was produced until 1969.
This has its original Carstens Tonnieshof paper label on the neck. It is probably from the Ankara range and was designed by Herman Scholtis in the early 1960s. It is Model: 1218-29.
Carstens Tonnieshof was founded in 1946 by Ernst Carstens and his son Christian. The company had great success for many years and produced an enormous variety of decorative items of all shapes and glazes. In addition to their own pottery, they also manufactured ceramics for the Austrian company Goldscheider.
The Height is 11 1/4 inches (29 cm).
My vase is a taller one in the range - and is in excellent condition with no damage. It looks fabulous on display. These vases are always much sought after and large example. This is reflected in my asking price.
