This is a lovely antique / vintage lantern - which dates to the early 20th century, probably about the 1920s.
It is a fabulous decorative hanging lamp or lantern for an English Gothic style hallway or perhaps a living room with a high ceiling. I love the shape of this old lamp - with its cage design and tapered top with its cute little decorative cut-away shapes.
It is made of a cage of strapwork metal - with a silver-coloured distressed patina to the metal. The top is conical in shape with geometric cut-out shapes in the metal - where the light would shine out (as shown in close up in my third photo). There is a sturdy (and decorative) large ring at the top - and it comes with a hanging hook for the ceiling and hanging chain - original to the lamp. The shade is made of white opaque glass - and again original to the lantern - it has no chips or damages.
It is very Gothic / Arts and Crafts in style. It has a good bit of age to it and it is sold in antique shabby chic condition - but all nice and clean and ready to hang. It would just need the addition of an electric flex and modern holder and there you go! You might want to have that part and installation done by an electrician - but a simple job.
It is a substantial hanging shade - being 16 inches in height - and with a diameter at the widest point of 9 inches. The white glass shade inside measures 8 1/2 inches in height and has a diameter of 6 inches.
A most unusual old lantern which has been all hand made - with screws and rivets holding it together. These genuine old crafted lanterns are now hard to source - and it is listed at a fair asking price. It is a good quality one... A BARGAIN!
