This is one is a listing for the attractive cased ice white one from the Alvar Aalto Collection - it does have its original retail box, as photographed. It also has a little leaflet telling you about the designer and showing images of how these vases as made.
These classic pieces of Scandinavian glass were originally designed by the celebrated Finnish designer, Alvar Aalto in the 1930s. This one is a later issue probably from about the 1980s. It has etched mark on the base: ALVAR AALTO and being cased a better quality vintage example.
This is certainly one of the most iconic Scandinavian pieces of glassware. The name of the vase is the Savoy and it was originally commissioned by the Savoy Restaurant in Helsinki. Alvar Aalto was given a design brief to produced a vase and that the finished product must be able to perfectly display a single flower.
The organic shape that Aalto created suggests the flow and motion of running water or perhaps the undulating form of melting ice.
The minimalistic style is the hallmark of Aalto and the newly founded Artek. The Savoy Vase immediately became a sought after and popular design.
The first vases made in 1937 were made from wooden molds - but as demand for the Savoy vase increased - the original molds soon became worn and were subsequently replaced with more durable metal ones.
Production of the vase started at the Karhula Glassworks, and later in 1949 transferred over to Iittala. This is a later issue it has the raised Ittala letter on the base and also the iconic red Iittala sticker.
This dish is part of a vintage series made from the metal molds - the exterior of these pieces is completely smooth outside. A master glassblower at Ittala would blow a glass gather into the mould.
This dish is about 1 7/8 inches (4.7 cm) in height, and the width at the widest point is 7 1/2 inches (19.5 cm) by 6 1/2 inches (16.7 cm).
It is in good condition with no issues. This is certainly a lovely piece of mid-century Scandinavian glass. It would be perfectly at home on a stylish teak or rosewood coffee table.
