I have had this large decorative porcelain platter for many years - and found it when I was sorting out some of my neglected stock boxes.
It is certainly a lovely item and the imagery on it is quite stunning.
It is a serving tray or handled platter and was probably made in Germany in the early 20th century. It has a blue beehive mark on the reverse - which is similar to the Royal Vienna mark - but I think that it is more likely for Ackermann and Fritz. There seems to have been some writing next to the mark - which I suspect might be the words: Made in Germany or perhaps the pattern name - and in the distance past these have been blacked out to promote this as being a Royal Vienna mark.
Porzellanfabrik Ackermann & Fritze was established in Rudolstadt-Volkstedt in 1908 and produced premium elite porcelain. They were known for their production of porcelain tablewares featuring stylish Classical and Mythological Subjects. They were also very fond of using lots of decorative gilding on their wares.
I am selling this as a decorative piece - and certainly not as Royal Vienna. I have taken lots of images for your inspection.
The tray is in excellent condition with no losses. All the transfer printed decoration around the rim is without rubbing. There are no chips or cracks. There is no crazing to the image or the reverse. There is a very tiny surface scratch below the donkey, as photographed - but this is no evident when the platter is on display. This has been taken into account with my pricing.
It would probably not be an item for everyday use - but probably more for sitting on top of a low chest or on a display cabinet. The subject might suggest that the tray might be used to serve drinks from.
It is a nice large size measuring just over 19 1/2 inches (50 cm) x 11 1/2 inches (29.5 cm).
It is a nice large size. The imagery is also just such fun and features a joyful Bacchanalian processions. This pattern and variants of it with different applications of the figure groups - seems to have been popular in the later 19th century and early 20th century Germany. I have not been able to find out that much more about it - but it certainly is an interesting piece of Continental Pottery - and listed at a fair price.
