This is a lovely vintage Scottish paperweight - I think made by Vasart and slightly earlier than similar Strathearn weights.

It is a nice size - being about 2 1/4 inches in height and with a diameter at the widest point of about 3 inches.

The ground is an unusual scarlet tone - confined to the center of the weight base.

It has a total of thirteen full-length spokes. There is a central rosette of mainly pink, white, and blue-coloured millefiori canes. There are canes in each section between the wee spokes - these are mainly white and bright yellow in colour.

This one is quite interesting as it is certainly not as the cane work placement is not quite as precise as other examples. It seems that the production of paperweights at the Vasart factory was initially seen as a sideline for the gift trade. And many of the Vasart weights at this time have a tendency to be a little on the cruder side. It seems that the assembly of the canes was undertaken by Ysart women who were given a free hand in the individual designs. It is said that the canes were often laid out by women working in a caravan parked next to the Shore Road glassworks - and later a larger shed was acquired for paperweight assembly. Interestingly the higher quality Vasart weights which survive were produced completely by the Ysart men!

The dome has more of a grey tinge to the glass - and not as clear in tone as you would find in later Scottish weights.

It is damage free, with no chips or cracks - a very attractive weight.
